A diamond in the rough…
I found the following movie in the “Watch It Now” section of Netflix while searching through the Classics. All I can say is WOW!
It’s the original 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea made in 1916.
This was considered to be the first “Big Budget” sci-fi film (in 1916!) and was the first to use underwater filming that was developed just for it’s creation. Even more amazing is the fact that it’s based on books published around 1870.
How cool is that?
I highly encourage reading almost anything by Jules Verne. The man was incredibly ahead of his time…

Wow is right. The Kirk Douglas version was one of my favorites as a kid. It fascinated and frightened me all at the same time. It is still true for most submarine movies. Something about being trapped but also in control under that much water/pressure.
IMO, The Mysterious Island and Around the World in 80 Days are much more entertaining reads.
Jess – You wouldn’t want to hear that if it wasn’t for some interference from a troubled past, I would be on a Submarine right now. I am absolutely fascinated with them. It is really cool that Jules Verne pretty accurately described what it would be like so far into the future.
Adam – This version actually includes The Mysterious Island and it’s connection to 20,000 Leagues.
